Olympiad Autocrat: Dame Mezzie

Olympiad XX - Arts and Sciences Competition Categories

Okay, so which of your items will be entered where?

Specific limitations, rules, and general category information is listed below. If the category is not listed, it is not being offered.

  • Armor:
This category is to be used for all forms of armor and works of chain, leather and padded cloth which is meant to be used for body protection in battle. The following criteria are most important in this category:
    • Construction
    • Functionality
    • Aesthetics
  • Art, Three-Dimensional:
Three-D Artwork also encompasses such things as ceramics, sculptures, hand-made, or other items which are meant to be seen in three dimensions. This category too often sees painted D&D figurines, these will be limited per entrant, along with the following criteria:
    • Hand-painted, purchased figurines will be limited to no more than two (2) per entrant.
    • Aesthetics, mediums, and effectiveness of the piece.
  • Art, Two-Dimensional:
This category will encompass anything from canvas and oils to photography. Computer generated artwork also falls here. The following criteria and limitations will be applied:
    • Limit of two (2) in the same medium (only two computer generated or only two inks).
    • Modern, non-fantasy work will be judged appropriately.
    • Aesthetics, medium, and effectiveness.
  • Bardic; Instrumental, Performance, Vocal, Recitation:
This category will be held as the last event of the day, during the regular Bardic which is scheduled for after Interkingdom Court, once it's dark. You may sign in for the bardic up until the opening of Interkingdom Court. This is the only category which will have the sign-in open for so long. Remember, not all those participating in the Bardic will be entrants, but Bardic category entrants must perform at the Bardic.
    • Sign-in for the Bardic will end with the opening of Interkingdom Court.
    • There will be an overall limit of only three entries per entrant.
    • Only two (2) of the entries may be in the same performance medium.
    • Entrants may have one retry at any single entry to try to better their score.
    • All entrants to this category must do all performances at the public bardic (stage-fright will not be acommodated).
    • Aesthetics, command of the material, audience awareness/interaction, and performance will all be judged carefully.
  • Brewer/Vintner:
All entries into this category must include a list of the basic ingredients used in distilling or decanting any brews or liqueurs, presented in document form to the autocrat. She will keep them in confidence until after judging when they will be given back to entrants requesting them, or will be destroyed to preserve confidential ingredients. The full measurements of the ingredients are not needed, but the life of the decanting, the time brewing, etc is needed in addition to the ingredients. This category is for the true home brewer/vintner who goes for a quality product.
    • Please remember that this is the most subjective of all categories. However, here as with all others, the judges decisions will be final.
    • Limit of five entries, however, none may be of the same decanting (different recipes), and only three may be the same medium (three beers, three cordials, etc.).
  • Construction, Active:
This category is for anything with functional, moving parts. Anything from a trebuchet to a clock is enterable here. However, some constants remain:
    • Construction
    • Functionality
    • Aesthetics and care in the finished product
  • Construction, Passive:
This is the category which is closest to three-dimensional category. If you wish your entries to be based more on the construction of the object rather than the beauty, this is the category to fill. Examples are myriad, running the gauntlet of anything from staves to feast gear to blankets to live steel to scabbards.
    • Construction
    • Design aesthetics
  • Garb, Accessories:
This is the category in which to submit such things as gloves and hats and reticules and aprons and hoop skirts and laces and cloaks and capes and wings, and… well, you get the idea. The following criteria will be looked for as a general guide:
    • Construction
    • Design Functionality
    • Aesthetics
  • Garb, Feast:
Amtgard feasts are the fashion shows of Amtgard; as well they should be. In this category are the finest tunics, period gowns, surcoats, doublets, and all the clothing that make Amtgarders shine above the mundane. However, even feast garb should stand up to the rigors of wear and washings, or at least dry-cleaning. In Amtgard we show that we do not make costumes, but clothing meant to be worn and adorned. Judges will be noticing the following:
    • Design and Fit (models are the responsibility of the entrants)
    • Construction and durability
    • Purpose fulfillment - does this best represent what it was meant to show?
  • Garb, Fighting:
This is only to be those tunics, wrap-pants, and tabards which are to be used on a fighting field. If it is likely to fall apart the first time a fighter hits the ground, it will likely be better in feast garb category.
    • Only two entries may be of the same base design. i.e. two tunics, two wrap-pants.
    • Construction
    • Durability
    • Design Functionality
    • Aesthetics and fit
  • Garb, Monster:
This category more than any other is able to show off the creativity of the garber. Fantasy genre reigns supreme in this arena, and the garb is often best shown on a model. However, models are the responsibility of the entrants.
    • Design fulfillment - it must accurately, obviously represent what it was meant to be.
    • Construction
    • Aesthetics and fit
  • Jewelry:
Jewelry presented at Olympiad must represent the genre of Amtgard. A couple of pretty stones on a hemp rope is within the ability of many trained monkeys. Please ensure your jewelry has a specific function (i.e. a Knight's Chain, an adorned chain, a circlet for a member of nobility, a pin or broach for a cloak, an intricate necklace for a piece of feast garb, etc), or is in some way unique. Above all, it should never look like a friendship bracelet from a dollar store.
  • Needlework/Beadwork - Hand:
Special attention will be paid to design and functionality. Obviously a 6x6 piece of beadwork which took five months will be given favor over a 6x6 piece of aida cloth with cross stitching any ten year-old could do. The overriding factors will be adherence to the genre of Amtgard and endeavor. Even a 6 month piece of beadwork honoring Led Zepplin will be judged inferior to a cross-stitched, two color heraldic symbol. Beyond that, the following will be rewarded:
    • Mastery of handwork
    • Intricacy of detail
    • Careful construction
    • Design fulfillment - Did the artist fulfill the intention of the design well.
  • Needlework, Machine:
This is the place to put that incredible piece of applique, shading on applique, edging on cloth, etc. Therefore, this is not the place to show off how well your machine can act as a computer. This is freehand use of a sewing machine to demonstrate mastery of the implement. Unless you were the master of where that needle was going as it was moving at 20 stitches/second, find another category. (Originally designed, computerized sewing machine replicated embroidery should be placed into flat art.)
    • Mastery of machine stitch application for design function and aesthetics
    • Thoughtful construction
    • Design fulfillment
  • Owl:
This category is open for any publication with Amtgard as the subject. This is includes but is not limited to articles, web publications, etc. The only stipulation is that the entry must have already been published. Items which have yet to be published in the future should go into the rose or writing categories. While the subject matter is Amtgard, the intended audience can be for either Amtgarders or mundanes.
  • Rose:
This category is wide open, and the only real stipulation is that no matter the designer/maker, it will be gifted to a monarch for kingdom/group use at the close of judging, or at Interkingdom Court.
  • Weapons, Swords: As the class title implies, this category is for swords: long, short, great, two-handed. The following will be used as a guide for entrants and judges:
    • Amtgard Legal/safety - fully complies to the current rulebook
    • If construction alone is the desire of judging so there is no cover on the sword, the passive construction category may be best.
    • All weapons should be covered
    • Construction/durability
  • Weapons Other:
This category is to be used for anything from a hammer to a staff, a monster's rock, a shield, arrows, throwing and pointed daggers, pole arms, maces, etc. The list of criteria is much the same for swords:
    • Amtgard legal/safety - fully complies to the current rulebook
    • Construction/Durability
    • Fulfillment of use
  • Writing, Fiction/Non-Fiction/Poetry:
This autocrat positively refuses to subject judges to pages upon pages of bad poetry exalting the glories of knightly love, mindless odes to oblivion, or someone's need to explain a bad day. If it were in my prevue to ban all poems (and do so fairly), I would do so; however, in the interest of fairness and length of Clan, this is the best arrangement I could devise. That being said, all written entries must be submitted to following criteria:
    • Amtgard genre will be strictly ahered to in all writings.
    • Each entrant must enter a minimum of two (2) other categories besides writtens.
    • Entrants are limited to a total of three (3) separate entries in this category.
    • Any one entrant may only submit a total of two (2) poems.
    • All entries must be type written in 12 point Times Roman or Arial font.
    • No single entry may exceed five (5) type-written pages (one sided).
    • Each piece must have a title.
    • No piece may have the author's name on it.
    • Each entrant must have six (6) copies of each piece.
    • Entrants must be submitted to the Autocrat no later than Friday night at midnight MST.
